About Me

Psychological support grounded in dignity, context, and lived experience.

Karla Sofia Alvear seated in a warm therapy office

I'm a therapist and mental health professional with over 13 years of experience helping people and communities get through hard things — crisis, displacement, conflict, loss, and big life changes.

My work blends hands-on therapy experience with international humanitarian work in mental health and psychosocial support. I bring a trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and person-centered approach — meaning I focus on your strengths, not just your struggles, and I pay close attention to the relationships and context around you.

Your story matters here — your culture, your values, your life circumstances. I believe emotional pain doesn't happen in a vacuum. It's shaped by our relationships, our sense of identity, our work, the losses we carry, the uncertainty we face, and the world we live in. My job is to understand all of that with you, not just treat a symptom.

Approach

You are more than the problem that brought you here.

My approach is relational and collaborative. It considers personal experience alongside the social, cultural, and professional contexts that shape it.

Trauma-informed

Safety, trust, choice, and pacing are central. You remain the expert on your own experience.

Culturally responsive

Your identity, language, values, culture, and community are part of the conversation.

Power-aware and rights-based

The work can make room for discrimination, displacement, unequal power, and demanding systems.

Practical and strengths-based

Support can include reflection, emotional regulation, self-understanding, and daily practices.
